Two Fresh Tracks from Surfing SoundWaves

Scott Brown, AKA Surfing SoundWaves, returns to FreioMusic. The 22 year old Denver native illuminates your mind with his smooth and tasty style of music. The bass hits heavy and the leads ride smooth like Orangatang wheels. Here are two tracks from Surfing SoundWave’s upcoming EP “Guerilla Warfare” (due to drop late this fall) for free download! Each jam has it’s own distinct journey and feel. The Cozza Frenzy Remix bangs hard, making use of heavy leads and phat sub-bass. “Guerilla Warfare” (the title track) is a deep, ominous ride through the unknown. Wanderlust Wednesday – Ananda Yogiji & Jaya Lakshmi

Energized and enlivened by the beauty of Indian singing and instrumental uniqueness, Jaya began leading kirtan, call and response mantras accompanied by instruments such as the harmonium, tablas, the two-headed mrdanga, or in Jaya’s case, the 12-string guitar. She began writing her own devotional songs in the 1990′s on the Hawaiian islands. Her name was bestowed upon receiving harinam initiation from a great Vaisnava saint from India. It translates to “victory to the goddess Lakshmi”, the Hindu goddess of fortune and spiritual wealth. Since then, Jaya has created 4 solo albums on Sequoia Records.

 

 

 

 

 

Ananda Yogiji

Gentle acoustics coupled with peaceful vocals, Ananda Yogiji is a talented musician and composer. Not only is his music fed by mantras and a deep devotional spirit, but also his practice of yoga and meditation (primarily Kundalini) for over five years. He is a singer, a guitarist, a teacher, harmonium and Bansuri flute player, and a open and kind soul. Since partnering with Jaya Lakshmi, he has performed with artists like Jai Uttal, Shimshai, David Newman and Dave Stringer.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Since the two came together in November 2010, their collaboration has resulted in an incredible musical fusion, sacred and beautiful.  Their album, Live at the Altar of Love’ was a product of their Altar of Love Immersions which involve teaching yoga together, performing music and holding ceremony.

“How do you describe your sound? It is the hardest thing in the world to do.”  – Sam “I don’t want to follow other’s sound, and create that kind of music” Sam said [referring to the main-stage aka house music] “as long as we do something other people are not”.   They are staying true to their name and embracing cultures left and right.  Greg shapes the sound with his tight rhythm on the drums and his ‘bangers’ for the nightlife sub-loving ladies from the bay area while Sam stretches their comfort zone into foreign lands such as India, Ireland, and Nepal to name a few.

WANDERLUST WEDNESDAY! Festival season is upon us.

Blessed with an beautiful weekend in Eugene with blue skies and 80 degree weather, it is only fitting to share with the Freio community the Shangri La of Oregon and the most incredible festival location my barefoot self has experienced.

I present to you… HORNING’S HIDEOUT

Just outside of Portland, Oregon, this venue has it all. It is truly a land of enchantment. Camping in the Oregon hills, sun bathing by the pond, jamming out with the beautiful Doug Firs, nothing is better. If you haven’t experienced the magic behind this special place, make your way this summer! Not only does Horning’s have great festivals, but day use includes fishing, paddle boating, and exploring the mysterious and romantic backwoods. If you’re looking for a TRIP this summer, you know where I’ll be. See you on the other side!!

BEATZ & PEACES: Bowling Green, Kentucky

Scotty Tichenor & Aaron Green are the minds behind the sound.

Influenced by: Pretty Lights, Lotus, and Zoogma. 

In their own words: “Beatz & Peaces is a fusion between dub, dance, electronic jams and break beats. Influenced by many different bands and styles we bring a very technical, new and unique sound to the table. Breaking the barriers were music has to have specific genres..”

Bits and Nibbles of samples, synths, and lyrics. With a busy array of electronic and sound, Beatz & Peaces twists audio at will to create a unique playful sound. Despite the electronic feel they are musicians, playing the Guitar, Bass, Drums, Keyboard, as well as Vocals. They also prove that a laptop is an instrument that can be mastered.

Two Song Descriptions/ Reactions: (leave your reactions and comment below!)

Northern Lights, has an acoustic guitar intro riff that sets the tone for the rest of the song. It is a great tallent to be able to combine acoustic instrumentation to the digital spectrum of sound. 

Lost in Translation: With an eerie sounds, synths, loops, bells, bass, vocals is a airy blend of vibration. To me it is a cloudy idea presented with clarity. LFOs wobble the speaker’s face (and surly your own), while “_*^&^%_, _*^&^%__, Bang” brings you back to reality.  With sounds that resemble 90’s Nintendo 64 game sounds (james-bond or perfect dark), it has a unique feel, flow and development.

This dynamite duo is a fresh project from Adelaide, Australia. The smooth, cerebral music of Rohan and Josh (AKA Finite State) leads your mind to a beautiful and hidden part of your soul. Josh Warry is a returning Freio Artist for his self titled solo project, while Rohan makes his Freio debute. This new partnership is bound to blow up! With minimalistic leads, a low, smooth bass, and tranquil drums, Finite State brings an ambient vibe that is almost mesmerizing. I’m excited to see where the music takes this young and talented duo. In the words of the artists themselves; “For best results: Lights off, Headphones on”
