World’s Finest
The Domino Room-February 17th, 2017
Last Friday at the Domino Room in downtown Bend, Oregon, we were able to catch Leftover Salmon’s opener, World’s Finest. Featuring an electric banjo, saxophone, and vintage guitar, they had a rustic and organic vibe. Blending elements of ska, bluegrass and reggae, they were able to touch on several familiar sounds while adding their own character and a bit of a twist.
Juggling genres and different styles, it was obvious the group drew inspiration from assorted backgrounds. There were many moments of feel-good-bluegrass easily associated with Portland and The Pacific Northwest. Both upbeat and rock influenced it reminded me of groups like Fruition. Other times they would tone things down and switch over to reggae and ska. Some highlights included “Rub-a-dub” reggae and well timed breakdowns to group acapellas. With flexible musicianship, they were able to showcase a few covers as well. My favorite was their funky-bluegrass cover of “Pick Up the Pieces” by Average White Band. The nostalgia of the song, accompanied with their provocative saxophone, was a great way to close out the set.
Full of fun energy and a feel good vibe, World’s Finest had very personable crowd interaction and seemed to thoroughly enjoy their time on the stage.

Corey Butler
Corey Butler, a Costa Rican Gem
A Costa Rican Gem! This talented artist can cover, remix and add flare to any song requested. Not only can Corey Butler cover songs, but his original tracks are splendid. He brings in a smooth vibrato with careful attention to dynamics as he plays. He blends his vocals nicely with the guitarist’s virtuoso touch. This singer-songwriter has a knack ending one song with the same chord as the upcoming song to eliminate those awkward silences between songs. He is fluent in Spanish & English and is not afraid to sing in either one.

We Like Monsters
We Like Monsters: Denver, Colorado.
I was lucky to have the opportunity to see We Like Monsters live at Moe’s BBQ in Denver during the Underground Music Showcase, a festival. These fellas are an indie band with a real unique sound & feel. The lead singer, Tim, is a standout band orchestrator with a a drum stick sticking out of his back pocket as he sings. Previously, Tim was in a band called GreenField where he sang, said Adam, the former bassist in greenfield. When he is not singing, he either plays the keyboard or triggers samples and sounds with his midi pad, as the rest of the band takes center stage. The other band members pick up the slack with their superb musicality and feel. The bassist, has a rocker’s stance, and beanie to match it. The lead keyboardist has a double stack, or two keyboards on top of each other, each with their own customized synth sounds to enable versatile timbres for melodies. If you like the music, don’t miss an opportunity to see We Like Monsters in a personable venue (before they become well known)! Have a listen and be sure to listen to the music video: “Le Tigre” (see below)

Taking classical string instruments and beautifully transforming them in the name of rock music, Corvos is molding a unique yet familiar sound. It is a sound that embodies the boldness of an orquestra and the energy and passion of rock and roll. The band’s influences include genre defining musicians such as The Doors, Nirvana, and the Kronos Quartet. Two cover albums and three original, the dedication and incredible musicianship is apparent with their complex arrangements. Members include Luis Santos on the viola, Cláudio Nunes on cello, Pedro Teixeira da Silva on the 1st violin, Tiago Flores on 2nd violin, and Pedro Silva on the drums. Their sound is moving and unmatched, deep and soulful. I highly recommend listening to “Do you really love me”. Chris Ilett
Chris Ilett form Leicester, United Kingdom
Chris started playing music at the age of 12 and his thirst for music still isn’t quenched. Chris Illet’s tallent spans multiple instruments including guitar, vocals, bass, and a laptop. His style: Rock. His signiture: Vocals, which are comparable to the lead singer of Bush, Gavin Rossdale and Bob Dylan. Bush is from London, coincidence? I think Not. Chris’s voice has a raspy weathered timbre. His distorted guitar solos tear through the backing instruments with clarity. He discribes his sound as “Troubled, intense, [and] raw.” Sound appealing? Hear for yourself!

I asked Ashelyn what inspires her. She replied, “I am classically trained vocally, and much of my songwriting is inspired by composers such as Nobuo Uematsu and Sergei Rachmaninov. I like to incorporate classical techniques into my songs, and I seek to always use real instruments, as a digital counterpart can never fully recreate the nuanced timbre of a live cello, piano, etc. I believe there is great beauty in the complexity of classical compositions, and I hope to one day be able to emulate them more completely.” Well said! *Ashelyn, you are going somewhere! Celebrating Eugene, Oregon Through Music
There isn’t anything better than celebrating a place that values community, local artists and businesses, and the environment that harbors it all. Basically, there is no celebration like the Eugene Celebration that took place this past weekend, August 26, 27, and 28th. What really topped the entire shebang off, however, was the music. Local artists came to showcase their talents at numerous stages throughout the downtown alongside of acclaimed visiting musicians. Friday night at the KLCC stage was rocked by Fely Tchaco. Rooted in traditional Ivorian music, the sounds emanating from the stage were soulful, socially aware, and incredibly beautiful. With a five year old girl tearing it up on my right and a tattooed 70+ couple dancing harder than I’ve ever seen to my left, I was in good company, and it continued like that all weekend long. The night was topped off with a little roots reggae by the boys of Iration. Bringing a little bit of Hawaii north into the mainland, their up-tempo beats and island looks had the ladies shakin’ it in the front, myself included. Saturday afternoon at the Eugene Weekly Stage was graced with incredible local talent during the Eugene Weekly’s ‘Next Big Thing’ competition. Betty and the Boy made celebrators stop in their tracks with soothing vocals and mellow rhythms. Up next Tyler Fortier blew the crowd away with his sexy voice and all-star band. The winner? A tie. Eugene’s music scene is just that good. Saturday night for me began with the lineup that you absolutely could not stand still to. Hillstomp, Mississippi backwoods bluegrass, and later Dumpstaphunk, New Orleans funk, tore up their stages making people of all ages officially get down. There could be no better way to celebrate the incredible community that is Eugene, Oregon.
“Music does bring people together.
It allows us to experience the same emotions.
People everywhere are the same in heart and spirit.
No matter what language we speak, what color we are,
the form of our politics or the expression of our love and our faith,
music proves: We are the same.”
~ John Denver ~
