Mike’s Picks

*A special thanks to all of the artistis who have participated in freio Music!!!

Great Year! So much new music, hard to narrow it down, but here it is:

Favorite FreioConcert

After Sober Raver got 3 VIP passes and a meet and greet with San Quinn (bay area rapper), the night was kicked off right when I met several Veterans in the back stage who had recently returned from Iraq and Afghanistan.  The Rock’s warm welcome to the troops set the atmosphere when the Starz took the stage!  To get free download & read more click here…

Favorite Freio Artist from 2011!

Madhushree from Mumbai, India

Despite language differences, it was a pleasure to be contacted by an amazing artist from India.  She is now internationally recognized for her voice and deserves every bit of recognition she has earned!

ComScoreComScore
“It was Oscar winner A.R. Rahman who brought her into the limelight with his unforgettable composition, ‘Kabhi neem neem kabhi shahad shahad…’ in Mani Ratnam’s film ‘Yuva’. This song gave Madhushree the kind of recognition which every singer dreams of.

Awesome music that hasn’t yet been featured on FreioMusic!

Signal Path!

Wick-it the Instigator  from Nashville, United States

This Artist has been busy in the last 365 days.  In fact, he has released nearly 100 songs!

“His roots are in hip hop/turntablism, but in the last couple years, electronic music has vastly made its way into his repertoire as well. Wick-it is all about the party, and despite the style or approach with each individual track, serious crowd rocking fun is the goal.”-Wick-it

Signmark the Deaf Hip-Hop Artist

November 11, 2011 By Michael Leave a Comment

Signmark: from Helsinki, Finland

A Deaf Finnish rap artist, Marko Vuoriheimo whose stage name is Signmark, left his (signing) mark on the festival, ‘See the Music’ in June 2011 in Greece.  Signmark, rather appropriately named for being a Deaf Musician, is a young and rising musician who expands the audiences’ mind.  His fluid signing and rhythmic rhyming are impressive, to say the least. “Signmark (a.k.a. Marko Vuoriheimo) started spreading his message over strong beats where hard, low frequencies and bass are playing a crucial part in his performance. These elements help him adapt to the rhythm as he proves; music is more than what you can hear!”

His accomplishments in the Musical community have not gone unnoticed.  He is the first Deaf person to be ‘signed’ to an international major music label.  Signmark has gathered support from friends and the Deaf community to release the world’s 1st ever Sign Language (ASL) hip-hop DVD in 2006.

Signmark shows empathy and support for the hearing world by collaborating with a hearing hip-hop artist Brandon, who is his voice for the hearing audience.  It is arguable that Brandon, a rather bland name, would never have become internationally recognized if it weren’t for Signmark’s commendable efforts with the integration between the Deaf and Hearing populations.  However, without the help and musical awareness of Brandon, there is no doubt that Signmark’s success would have been dwarfed if the hearing audience could not appreciate the music.  By collaborating with a hearing artist who respects Signmark’s style, culture, and language the duo hip-hop team is on their way to change the world.  “Open your mind” signs Signmark, and rapped by Brandon in their song, “Our Life”

U Saw it first HEAR @freioMusic

*Signmark is a collaborative effort by Signmark (a.k.a. Marko Vuoriheimo), Brandon (vocals), Weirdness (VJ/DJ)

“The live shows are always bilingual. The songs are performed with American Sign Language and spoken English. Signmark has gained international interest by touring in several countries, including Japan, U.S.A., Iceland, Spain, Ethiopia and Namibia…. The album ‘Signmark’ takes a stand for equality and aims to bring people together”.    The FreioMusic community supports Signmark’s worldly vision.   We would like to send out a warm welcome to Marko (signs), Brandon (vocals), and Weirdness (vj/dj) as they prepare for a comprehensive tour schedule in America.  They plan on stopping in Seattle, Portland, SanFransico, L.A, and several other cities.

Whether this is your first time hearing the inaudible raps of a signing-poet and musician, or if you are familiar with this hip-hop duo from Europe, you can help these artists grow their fan base.  Increase awareness for this spectacular form of artistic expression by sharing with friends.

Sparky and the RandOm bAnD

September 2, 2011 By Michael Leave a Comment

Sparky certainly has a unique sound and style which deserves recognition.  Nothing like original arrhythmic sounds that …. question the mind. This 33 year old from Minnesota (1st artist from Minnesota featured on FreioMusic!!) teams up with his wife to create the videos below.

“The music is mostly live instruments modified with effects pedals recorded in live improvised sessions. It is inspired by free jazz and beat poetry but done electronically.
The videos are shot with a canon digital camera and then modified with Magix Movie edit pro 17. Some editing and modifying is done with Magix music maker pro 17 on some of the audio tracks. We have a blog describing the instruments and processes a little more
Enjoy the road trip and thanks for the interest.”  -Patrick “Sparky”

Celebrating Eugene, Oregon Through Music

August 29, 2011 By Sober_Raver Leave a Comment

eugene-celebration-parade-2011-3628.jpg There isn’t anything better than celebrating a place that values community, local artists and businesses, and the environment that harbors it all. Basically, there is no celebration like the Eugene Celebration that took place this past weekend, August 26, 27, and 28th. What really topped the entire shebang off, however, was the music. Local artists came to showcase their talents at numerous stages throughout the downtown alongside of acclaimed visiting musicians. Friday night at the KLCC stage was rocked by Fely Tchaco. Rooted in traditional Ivorian music, the sounds emanating from the stage were soulful, socially aware, and incredibly beautiful. With a five year old girl tearing it up on my right and a tattooed 70+ couple dancing harder than I’ve ever seen to my left, I was in good company, and it continued like that all weekend long. The night was topped off with a little roots reggae by the boys of Iration. Bringing a little bit of Hawaii north into the mainland, their up-tempo beats and island looks had the ladies shakin’ it in the front, myself included. Saturday afternoon at the Eugene Weekly Stage was graced with incredible local talent during the Eugene Weekly’s ‘Next Big Thing’ competition. Betty and the Boy made celebrators stop in their tracks with soothing vocals and mellow rhythms. Up next Tyler Fortier blew the crowd away with his sexy voice and all-star band. The winner? A tie. Eugene’s music scene is just that good. Saturday night for me began with the lineup that you absolutely could not stand still to. Hillstomp, Mississippi backwoods bluegrass, and later Dumpstaphunk, New Orleans funk, tore up their stages making people of all ages officially get down. There could be no better way to celebrate the incredible community that is Eugene, Oregon.

“Music does bring people together.
It allows us to experience the same emotions.
People everywhere are the same in heart and spirit.
No matter what language we speak, what color we are,
the form of our politics or the expression of our love and our faith,
music proves: We are the same.”
~ John Denver ~
