This dynamite duo is a fresh project from Adelaide, Australia. The smooth, cerebral music of Rohan and Josh (AKA Finite State) leads your mind to a beautiful and hidden part of your soul. Josh Warry is a returning Freio Artist for his self titled solo project, while Rohan makes his Freio debute. This new partnership is bound to blow up! With minimalistic leads, a low, smooth bass, and tranquil drums, Finite State brings an ambient vibe that is almost mesmerizing. I’m excited to see where the music takes this young and talented duo. “Euforquestra planted their Euphoric Vibration on the West Coast!”

 

The seven member band, Eufórquestra, now hailing from Fort Collins, CO, is a funky, reggae infused, soul party not to be missed. Their music, steeped in a hot saxophone sound, invokes serious get down on the dance floor. Combining influences from Cuba, Brazil, and West Africa, the smooth rhythm is impossible not to groove to. The sound is original, an incredible display of musical creativity and freedom. Not limited to one genre, this band has a little bit of something to offer for everyone. At their performance last weekend in Portland, Oregon, the audience was all smiles, cheers-ing to good music and getting their funky dance on. If you find yourself the Colorado way, the band with be joining Kyle Hollingsworth Band (keyboardist of String Cheese Incident) this March for his BrewSki Tour. This is a jam sesh not to be missed my friends.

MaCaATIC CREW

Colorado Springs, just an hour south of Denver, sees little of the live music that continually funnels its through the mile high city. On Thursday, December 22nd, however, the Springs was rocked by the smooth, slightly pot infused, hip-hop genius that is Devin the Dude. The venue was mellowed out, sipping the extra tall boy PBRs as they waited for the main act. Various artists and groups took the stage, circles of Devin the Dude were fans unimpressed, trying to drink their way to enjoying the music. It wasn’t until a local Colorado Springs group, MaCaATIC Crew, took the stage that the crowd began to move. The energy was immediate.

In fact, the MacAatic Crew, synchronized and energetic, made the floor bounce.   They had clearly put in the time & effort to create an entertaining show! With a Masked Madman crawling upside down from the sealing, the crew took the crowd by surprise.  A clearly unique approach to the game.

Ma shit is mainly Electro-jammy-dubby-hip-hop(esque), with maybe a little glitch thrown in for good measure…i draw from a lot of different influences, as you will hear. I have a bachelor’s degree in music from Denison University, and am currently getting my masters degree at the University of Oregon in Intermedia Music Technology. With continual development Hamilton Beach crashes upon the shores of ones ears. Pleasant enough for early morning melodies.  Hamilton Beach clearly focuses on the synths as they all continually pulse, shrink, and morph.  The clever titles of the compositions, such as “I’ll think of something”, seem to get a little less attention.  After all there are no lyrics in the songs, why should one need to place a word on an instrumental?

Signmark the Deaf Hip-Hop Artist

Signmark: from Helsinki, Finland

A Deaf Finnish rap artist, Marko Vuoriheimo whose stage name is Signmark, left his (signing) mark on the festival, ‘See the Music’ in June 2011 in Greece.  Signmark, rather appropriately named for being a Deaf Musician, is a young and rising musician who expands the audiences’ mind.  His fluid signing and rhythmic rhyming are impressive, to say the least. “Signmark (a.k.a. Marko Vuoriheimo) started spreading his message over strong beats where hard, low frequencies and bass are playing a crucial part in his performance. These elements help him adapt to the rhythm as he proves; music is more than what you can hear!”

His accomplishments in the Musical community have not gone unnoticed.  He is the first Deaf person to be ‘signed’ to an international major music label.  Signmark has gathered support from friends and the Deaf community to release the world’s 1st ever Sign Language (ASL) hip-hop DVD in 2006.

Signmark shows empathy and support for the hearing world by collaborating with a hearing hip-hop artist Brandon, who is his voice for the hearing audience.  It is arguable that Brandon, a rather bland name, would never have become internationally recognized if it weren’t for Signmark’s commendable efforts with the integration between the Deaf and Hearing populations.  However, without the help and musical awareness of Brandon, there is no doubt that Signmark’s success would have been dwarfed if the hearing audience could not appreciate the music.  By collaborating with a hearing artist who respects Signmark’s style, culture, and language the duo hip-hop team is on their way to change the world.  “Open your mind” signs Signmark, and rapped by Brandon in their song, “Our Life”

Concert Report from Spain

A warm brisk night in Seville, Spain, leads to the makings to a wonderful night of music. The music-goers start to trickle in the street surrounding the venue around midnight. Nightlife in Europe begins much later than Americans are accustomed to.  As cars pull up, trunks are popped, music played, drinks are passed, and the dancing begins. Inside Cosmos, a large dance-floor is surrounded by stacks of speakers in all four corners packing plenty of bass with amazing quality.  The lights covered the ceiling, with more strobes behind the performers. A full-service bar with beautiful bartenders, a premium sitting area with a good view of the stage, allowed everyone to find a comfortable place to enjoy the music. Top of the bill were Drum-N-Bass heavyweights Counterstrike from South Africa, with local favorites Dub Elements, Venganza, and Qkhack leading us into the night. Qkhack began the festivities with a wonderful set, a bit lighter than what was to come. Dub Elements was amazing, with a wide variety of drops, bass, and build-ups. The much-anticipated Counterstrike, was worth the wait, and brought some of the most serious bass, heavy hitting hard Drum-N-Bass. The dance-floor literally erupted and didn’t stop moving until the end of their set.

Qkhack – Broke (Unsigned) by Qkhack

Overall, it was much different from anything else I have ever experienced, a wonderful loving crowd, accepting of my lack of Spanish speaking skills, and amazing music. If you ever find yourself in Seville, Spain check out the Resistance facebook page, they have events sporadically, but would definitely be worth checking out.

His attention to dynamics and high-pass drops followed by heavy bass on the downbeat are noticeable. Allali’s tracks have gradual, continuos and creative developments throughout the duration of the song.  With nice repetitive drum and bass loops, this DJ knows the niche! Did we mention Amine Allali is only 16 years old! He started his musical carrer on the guitar at age 8.
