Tall Tale Excursion

April 27, 2012 By FreioMusic 1 Comment

Tall Tale Excursion: USA-Eugene, Oregon

“We like to call our style of music Oregon Greengrass!”

This joyful quartet includes band members: Aslan Sheffler (age 21), Gage Hawke (age 23), Andy Gullickson (age 24), Meg Keefe (age 20).   A young and dedicated band, who has been playing music from an young age. They have much more in store for them in the years to come.  There music and style is evolving with each song expanding their musical terrain.  It was great to meet these nice fellows on campus as they serenaded the passersby.  There is nothing quite like meeting street musicians who’s sound blows you off course and you must stop to enjoy!

[box_dark]-From left to right Aslan Sheffler, Andy Gullickson, Gage Hawke (this picture is missing a a key ingredient, Meg, the talented fiddle player, who has been playing since age 5!)[/box_dark]

“We are Tall Tale Excursion, we play folk/bluegrass/blues. We are currently a 4 piece band (banjo, guitar, fiddle/stand up bass, and mandolin) based out of Eugene! We recently picked up a fiddle and mandolin phenoms, videos with them are coming soon!”  It is clear that this band is on the rise as they are entertaining new audiences and while expanding and refining their sound.  Stay tuned, as there is much more to come from this quartet.

With a wide array of instruments these musicians pick & play it all.  They play: Guitar, Vocals, Bass, Drums, Keyboard, Banjo, Fiddle, Mandolin, Dobro, Harmonica, Washboard, Trumpet, and Kazoo. Their influences include: Blackberry Bushes Stringband, Greensky Bluegrass ,Old Crow Medicine Show, Buckey Walters, Devil Makes Three, Metallica, the Doors, Queen, Rush, Led Zeplin, Jimi Hendrix, Earl Scruggs, Paul Gilbert, Marty Freedman

April 25, 2012 By Sober_Raver Leave a Comment

Blessed with an beautiful weekend in Eugene with blue skies and 80 degree weather, it is only fitting to share with the Freio community the Shangri La of Oregon and the most incredible festival location my barefoot self has experienced.

I present to you… HORNING’S HIDEOUT

Just outside of Portland, Oregon, this venue has it all. It is truly a land of enchantment. Camping in the Oregon hills, sun bathing by the pond, jamming out with the beautiful Doug Firs, nothing is better. If you haven’t experienced the magic behind this special place, make your way this summer! Not only does Horning’s have great festivals, but day use includes fishing, paddle boating, and exploring the mysterious and romantic backwoods. If you’re looking for a TRIP this summer, you know where I’ll be. See you on the other side!!

Resolution- Jan 28th, 2012

Resolution Portland, Oregon, USA

Upon reflection, this show has been a highlight of 2012 thus far.  With much more to come, who can sit still? Here is some of the music that has permitted the West Coast vibrations and will continue for yeas to come!

Phuture Primitive!

Horizon Events threw a massave rager in a warehouse in Portland.  Actually let me rephrase that.  A collective effort was put forth to create a ridiculous event with a killer light show.  A spectacular display of lights, lasers, and video to the eyes with lighting by Dreamer, visuals by Light Trope, and space shaping by Renaissnce Raven, the ave was scheduled from 9:00PM to 6:00AM.  9 hours of head pounding, sternum wrenching bassy electronic music coupled with incredible visuals, i think all were sweaty and satisfied as the sun was rising.

“RESOLUTION! The show was sold out!!!!!!! 500+ heads in the building make for a special night! Big ups to RE SOUND for the KV2 sweetness, all the vendors, the AMAZING DJ TALENT, THE AMAZING SECURITY TEAM, MICHEAL BOWLES and his crew for the dopest stage setup I have ever seen, JOSH FITZ for equally impressive video design, DREAMER with the DOPEST LASER SHOW IN THE NW” -Zilch

A special thanks to Tribal Spectrum, Michael Bowls (Renaissance Raven), Stapelton, Alden Rodgers and Horizon Events!

Euforquestra

Euforquestra from Fort Collins, Colorado

“Euforquestra planted their Euphoric Vibration on the West Coast!”

The seven member band, Eufórquestra, now hailing from Fort Collins, CO, is a funky, reggae infused, soul party not to be missed. Their music, steeped in a hot saxophone sound, invokes serious get down on the dance floor. Combining influences from Cuba, Brazil, and West Africa, the smooth rhythm is impossible not to groove to. The sound is original, an incredible display of musical creativity and freedom. Not limited to one genre, this band has a little bit of something to offer for everyone. At their performance last weekend in Portland, Oregon, the audience was all smiles, cheers-ing to good music and getting their funky dance on. If you find yourself the Colorado way, the band with be joining Kyle Hollingsworth Band (keyboardist of String Cheese Incident) this March for his BrewSki Tour. This is a jam sesh not to be missed my friends.

The Infamous Stringdusters

Note:

See how much fun those three people are having? It is thanks to the bluegrass infused genius that is The Infamous Stringdusters who have won my vote for ‘coolest live music’ this year so far. Not only are they a beautifully harmonized batch of country boys, but they can bring the party to Eugene, Oregon, even if it is Sunday night. A result of pure, raw talent, and a little musical melding with Drew Emmitt.

See the Music

November 10, 2011 By Michael Leave a Comment

Artwork by Luisella Zuccotti

Deaf people are not only amazing visual artists (see above artwork), but musically inclined as well!  In American Universities, music-history classes often discuss influential blind musicians.  History is old, out of date, yet it is being written today. There are some very influential Deaf musicians, alive today, who have yet to be included in the textbooks.
Roughly 5 months ago, Greece had a revolutionary concert for both the Deaf and Hearing populations called ‘See the Music’.  As stated on the ‘seethemusic’ website: “Our goal with hosting this event is to bring together two superficially different worlds, since the only difference between them lies on the language they use.”  The phrase ‘linguistic minority’ is used to describe the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing, illustrating the lack of popularity and fluency in Sign Language.  The concert was translated/ preformed in ASL as well as the Greek Sign Language (GSL).  This concert was free to enter and open to the public.
Artists including K.TBHA and Signmark both preformed at the event.

Carlos Rada: from Caracas, Venezuela

Carlos, a 36 year-old from Venezuela, started playing the keyboard at age 17.  After learning the keys, Carlos learned how to sing, play the guitar, laptop, and the cuatro. Carlos is inspired by artists such as:  BB King, Frank Sinatra, the Beatles, Tina Turner, and Simon Diaz.   have-a-listen!~)

Los niños que perdieron la inocencia by Carlos Rada (El musico)

Carlos’s music varies, as is illustrated by his description of his music.  Carlos describes his music as: “Blues, House, Latin, Rock, and World.” This track was released within the last month and is exploring a different direction than other tracks released on soundcloud, the blues (possibly Latin Jazz mixed with rock drums?)… Listen for your self:

Ash Graham

Ash Graham from New Zealand!

U heard it first HEAR @freioMusic

Singles by Ash Graham

Ash is a singer songwriter from the Kapiti Coast of New Zealand. He started playing guitar at 6 and songwriting at 11. Singing followed a few years later. Ash’s voice sounds far more mature than the look of his face. Ash is 17 years old and already making leaps towards his dream of exploring the world through his music.  His voice resembles Jason Mraz, Jackie Greene, Ben Harper, and John Butler.  This rising star has already been found by the local TV station (see youtube links below)

Although he has received some exposure in New Zealand, Ash has little international presence.  Thanks to the Internet, we can find amazing artists like Ash.  Ash is in a band called ‘The Avenue Eve’ and seems to be stirring up a fan base as we speak.  We, at FreioMusic, are very excited to feature Ash Graham because we know he is just getting started.  Keep up the great work Ash!  Stay tuned for more…

Ash was 3rd in the Play It Strange National Secondary Schools songwriting competition with his song Routine. It also reached the semi finals in the Teen section of the International Songwriting Competition.

Chris Ilett

October 4, 2011 By Michael Leave a Comment

Chris Ilett form Leicester, United Kingdom

Chris started playing music at the age of 12 and his thirst for music still isn’t quenched. Chris Illet’s tallent spans multiple instruments including guitar, vocals, bass, and a laptop.  His style: Rock.  His signiture: Vocals, which are comparable to the lead singer of Bush, Gavin Rossdale and Bob Dylan.  Bush is from London, coincidence?  I think Not.  Chris’s voice has a raspy weathered timbre. His distorted guitar solos tear through the backing instruments with clarity.  He discribes his sound as “Troubled, intense, [and] raw.” Sound appealing? Hear for yourself!

The Album Leaf + Sister Crayon – Doug Fir Lounge

September 19, 2011 By Sober_Raver Leave a Comment

Intimate venues are hard to come by. A venue in which you feel some odd close connection to the artist. The Doug Fir Lounge in Portland, Oregon embodies this warm vibe while still upholding its ultra hip reputation. In one word the lounge could be defined as ‘swanky’. Dim lights created a mellow mood, but the vivid neon accents kept the room alive and rocking. The show? The Album Leaf with opener, Sister Crayon. Although the crowd consisted of mostly plaid shirts, facial hair, and glasses (aka the Portland hipster) the show was charged with unimaginable musical talent. Terra Lopez, the lead singer of Sister Crayon, began as a solo act with only a classical guitar and a loop pedal to create the dream-like impression her music leaves. With the addition of Dani Fernandez and Jeffrey LaTour the band united under a new holistic melding of sound.A sound that is beautiful, deep, and full. On stage, Sister Crayon comes to life and is incredible to watch despite the calmness of their music. You can see the passion behind it. Following, The Album Leaf brought a new presence to the stage. The stunning video display and LED vertical lights making shadows on the huge Fir beams beautifully paralleled the mostly instrumental melodies of the band. Their talents displayed an awesome attention to detail and knowledge of sound. The Album Leaf, Sister Crayon + The Doug Fir Lounge = One rad show. I would highly suggest putting on your ‘hippest’ outfit and making your way to a show in the basement of the Doug Fir. Best venue I’ve been to in Portland hands down.
