He’s My Brother, She’s My Sister

A rocking band traveling the West-coast & Mid-west USA.

He’s my Brother She’s my Sister, aka HMBSMS, is a band with flare, touch, tap, and style. A unique approach to music and crowd participation. In fact they invited some of the wildest and bravest crowd members to sing with them on stage. HMBSMS has a very heavy tour schedule, and is constantly on the move. After seeing He is my brother she is my sister in Eugene, Oregon, I had to talk with them. The band members were kind enough to agree to a phone interview (click here). The night was clear, the flow of beer, and the music was here at Sam Bond’s Garage. The sibling vocal harmonies were noticeable in the incredibly cohesive sound despite the Rob having the flue, and sweating profusely during the entire show. The percussionist Lauren, standing on a kick drum tap-dancing, danced with enthusiasm and a purpose. Rachel’s beautiful vocals and occasional tambourine shakes kept the flare alive. With walking bass lines and sliding lap-steal guitar, the sound was keyed in. HMBSMS opened up the microphone up to other members of the audience, who gratefully grabbed the mic to scat and howl the night away. With a taste of Eugene, this band wanted a little more, entertaining an encore to the fans delight. A Costa Rican Gem! This talented artist can cover, remix and add flare to any song requested. Not only can Corey Butler cover songs, but his original tracks are splendid. He brings in a smooth vibrato with careful attention to dynamics as he plays. He blends his vocals nicely with the guitarist’s virtuoso touch. This singer-songwriter has a knack ending one song with the same chord as the upcoming song to eliminate those awkward silences between songs. He is fluent in Spanish & English and is not afraid to sing in either one.

We Like Monsters

We Like Monsters: Denver, Colorado.

I was lucky to have the opportunity to see We Like Monsters live at Moe’s BBQ in Denver during the Underground Music Showcase, a festival. These fellas are an indie band with a real unique sound & feel. The lead singer, Tim, is a standout band orchestrator with a a drum stick sticking out of his back pocket as he sings. Previously, Tim was in a band called GreenField where he sang, said Adam, the former bassist in greenfield. When he is not singing, he either plays the keyboard or triggers samples and sounds with his midi pad, as the rest of the band takes center stage. The other band members pick up the slack with their superb musicality and feel. The bassist, has a rocker’s stance, and beanie to match it. The lead keyboardist has a double stack, or two keyboards on top of each other, each with their own customized synth sounds to enable versatile timbres for melodies. If you like the music, don’t miss an opportunity to see We Like Monsters in a personable venue (before they become well known)! Creative from the beginning of their career, they use, adapt and thrive with the instruments available. This crew is ingenuitive and surprisingly good. Have a listen! In three words they describe their sound as, “Pure Genuine Rock” – Will age 24. This young band has the potential to grow and change their sound as they get their hands on new instruments and tools. “How do you describe your sound? It is the hardest thing in the world to do.” – Sam “I don’t want to follow other’s sound, and create that kind of music” Sam said [referring to the main-stage aka house music] “as long as we do something other people are not”. They are staying true to their name and embracing cultures left and right. Greg shapes the sound with his tight rhythm on the drums and his ‘bangers’ for the nightlife sub-loving ladies from the bay area while Sam stretches their comfort zone into foreign lands such as India, Ireland, and Nepal to name a few.

The Nature Stage –

A mystery set in the woods at nature stage, by Ekim. With the backdrop of an incredible Oregonian rainforest scene (see above Picture). Ekim could throw it down to amuse and confuse the crowd simultaneously. Ekim also knew how to change it up, and he would do so at will, not according to the set list but by what people were getting down to. With heavy wobbles and Super-Sound speakers taller than the average taller person. The variety of sound was great and the noise selection was very thought-out and carefully placed in space.

Human Nature '12 – Learning to Adapt

Midnight Thursday June 28th

Today we, Sober Raver and I, learned that it is part of human nature to adapt to one’s environment. Lesson: as one car breaks down another one lends a wheel. Our (initial) Plan, was to leave Thursday to attend the Volunteer Orientation sesh, and set up camp. We were all packed up and ready, just need to pick up some beer and food, when my car dies enroute, and glides to a stop when gravity permitted. Power-steering = gone, hazard light = won’t work, engin = dead, progress = halted. Plan B: Call some friends, jump onto facebook, find a ride share, repack our gear (take less) and make it work. Success, or so it seems….

Wanderlust Wednesday Presents – Corvos

Taking classical string instruments and beautifully transforming them in the name of rock music, Corvos is molding a unique yet familiar sound. It is a sound that embodies the boldness of an orquestra and the energy and passion of rock and roll. The band’s influences include genre defining musicians such as The Doors, Nirvana, and the Kronos Quartet. Two cover albums and three original, the dedication and incredible musicianship is apparent with their complex arrangements. Members include Luis Santos on the viola, Cláudio Nunes on cello, Pedro Teixeira da Silva on the 1st violin, Tiago Flores on 2nd violin, and Pedro Silva on the drums. Their sound is moving and unmatched, deep and soulful. I highly recommend listening to “Do you really love me”. It is hauntingly romantic and tells a mesmerizing story that impossible not to close your eyes and follow.
